August 19, 2018 2:10 am

A large 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred 62km North East from Waiqori village in Lau between Fiji and Tonga around 12:19pm today.

The epicenter was about 120km east of Lakeba and although the depth of the earthquake was over 209km below the bottom of the ocean, reports received confirm small tsunami waves were seen.

FBC News received reports from Nausori, Nadi, Lautoka as well as from the North experiencing a slight earth tremor.

People living along coastal areas near the earthquake are advised to be observant and exercise normal caution.

There also may be significant damage houses and infrastructure on nearby islands.

The Mineral Resources department says it doesn’t pose any immediate threat to the Fiji region.

However, they will continue to monitor the situation.
