November 29, 2012 6:24 pm

Fiji has joined hands with the rest of the world to mark the 16 days of activism against violence against women.

While all efforts are being made, Empower Pacific, an NGO has taken a different approach, targeting pregnant women and their partners.

They’ve been working with women in health facilities across the country, providing them with protection and helping them heal from the effects of violence.

This year alone, Empower Pacific has screened 12,000 women through ANC clinics, out of which 1000 have been found to have experienced some form of violence.

In his address to the world for the 16 days of activism, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon called on all governments to live up to their pledges to end violence against women.

Women Minister Dr Jiko Luveni says their efforts are bearing fruit.

The 16 days of activism ends on December 10th, however Dr Luveni says, work continues.
