NFP provisional candidate resigns after rape allegations

A provisional candidate of the National Federation Party has resigned after his alleged involvement in a rape case.

NFP Leader, Professor Biman Prasad confirms this saying that the provisional candidate resigned after he was arrested.

Prasad says that it was the right thing for him to do and the party was expecting it.

The man is still admitted at the CWM hospital under guard by police.

Police Spokesperson, Ana Naisoro says that the 66-year-old dentist of Nadi was arrested last week for allegedly raping a 53-year-old woman in her home in Nasinu.

It is alleged the suspect who is related to the victim had asked to rest at the victim’s home after attending a wedding in Suva.

The victim resides alone.

After 9pm on the day of the alleged incident, the suspect turned up at the victim’s residence and asked if he could sleep at her home as he was tired.

It is alleged that the victim was inside her room when the suspect knocked on her bedroom door and forced himself on her.

Naisoro says that it is alleged that the man assaulted her before raping her.
The victim later managed to free herself and locked herself in the bathroom where she raised alarm.

Investigations continue.
