NFA urges public to observe fire safety

The National Fire Authority is urging the public to observe all fire safety measures while celebrating the festival of lights.

The NFA says the celebration will see an increase in the use of ‘diyas’ or oil lamps, candles, electrical decorations and firecrackers.

The NFA is warning the public to be aware of the dangers surrounding the use of candles and diyas in your homes and surroundings.

People are also being urged to not to leave any cooking unattended.

The NFA has recorded one hundred and eleven structural fires so far this year as compared to one hundred and seven property fires last year.

The major causes of property fires are electrical related problems, arson cases and negligence which comprises of unattended cooking, children playing with matches, candle and uncontrolled burning fires.

The NFA says they have attended to tragic home fires in the past during periods of such celebrations and it is important for home owners to keep vigilant and ensure a fire safe celebration during the Diwali festivities.
