NFA officers to be proactive when putting out big fires

National Fire Authority’s Chief Executive Manasa Lesuma says they will need to be proactive in terms of battling huge fires on tall buildings.

Since there is a lot of construction of tall buildings around the Suva area, Lesuma says their officers should be well versed with what needs to be done if tall buildings catches fire.

“We need to fight the fire before the fire, we need a lot of education on our people in terms of understanding what needs to be installed in buildings. We are focusing in trying to be more proactive, building owners need to take the responsibility in ensuring that they are compliant in terms of having equipment that would be able to detect fires or even smoke detectors or heat detectors that will definitely help NFA.”

Lesuma says that they are also trying to get the latest equipment to help their officers with putting out large fires.

Meanwhile, Construction Industry Council President Gordon Jenkins says when they construct any building, they always ensure there are safety measures in place to prevent fires from happening.
