New Zealand wants stronger defence ties

Fiji and New Zealand needs to strengthen defence relations and start planning joint initiatives.

This is the belief of New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully who is on a visit to Fiji.

Following talks with various government ministers, McCully says New Zealand is keen to progress defence co-operation.

‘’This is an area with us for an opportunity for both of us to expand our cooperation and some of the area where you can’t plan so if you have a crisis or a catastrophe somewhere in the region we can work together spontaneously as we have saw last year in Vanuatu, we able to use our aircraft with our troops together’’.

McCully has confirmed that during talks, it’s been decide that 20 officers from the disciplined forces will travel to New Zealand in the coming months.
