Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has opened a new water system in Qelekuro village Tailevu – the first ever piped water for the community.

The villagers of Qelekuro in Tailevu now don’t have to worry about the quality of drinking water anymore.

The new water system funded by the villagers and the Water Authority of Fiji was opened by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama this morning.

The construction of the project which involved the building of a new tank, dam and pipe laying to the homes in the villages cost over $100,000.

The request for a new clean and safe water supply comes on the back of a survey report by the Rural Local Authority in Tailevu that the village water source is contaminated.

The report stated that the water from the river was not safe for consumption as there were homes up river as well as animals.

Villagers contributed $9000 towards the project after a fundraising in late November last year.

Building works started early this year and was completed two weeks ago.
