New vehicles imported needs to be Euro 4 compliant

June 12, 2019 6:39 am

Strict conditions have been imposed on vehicles importation, as it now has to be Euro 4 compliant.

This has been stressed by Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum as Euro 4 fuel concentrates on cleaning up emissions from diesel cars.

However, Sayed-Khaiyum says some car dealers are not following simple rules.

“What we are saying is that even though the fuel standard now as gazette last year has come into effect from Jan this year, where the fuel comes into Fiji unleaded is Euro 4, diesel is Euro 5. But most of the new cars that come into Fiji that’s imported by car dealers, new cars, there are Euro 2, so it defeats the purpose.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says henceforth, all new cars that are being imported must be Euro 4 compliant.

Meanwhile, Fiji Motor Traders Association Head Suresh Singh says car dealers need some areas clarified.

“We are seeking clarification from the Minister regarding Euro 4 standard and other requirements since most of them have got 6 months advance product are coming from Japan so they cannot be changed overnight to Euro 4.”

Singh says they have some vehicles which are Euro 2 compliance, but since the Euro 5 fuel came in, Euro 2 vehicles have been running on Euro 5 without any problem.

He says Euro 4 vehicles could be expensive for Fijians.
