In a bid to keep Fiji clean the government has allocated $1.5 million to standardize rubbish bins in Fiji.

Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the new initiative will begin in Nasinu and more rubbish bins will be made visible on our road side.

Sayed-Khaiyum says new programs will also be introduced to cater for compost bins as this will reduce pollution.

“We will be introducing a new pilot program in Nasinu to distribute compost bins where Fijians can dispose the organic waste like leaves and kitchen waste, so we will actually be creating compost from that waste for productive use.”

Meanwhile the new national competition known as clean community competition will soon be launched across Fiji.

Sayed-Khaiyum says this competition will bring a sense of pride and achievements to Fijians who go an extra mile to clean their communities
He says maintaining a clean environment requires societal change and mind sets to think about our actions and consider the consequences.
