New passport has lots of new security features: PM

Fiji is now entering the new era of technology as the new e-passports have been launched by the immigration department today.

The new passport has lots of new security features to make traveling easier for Fijians.

With the rollout of the new passports, Fiji has joined 54 other countries from the globe that have already engrained such technology in their passports.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the e-passports consolidate security requirements at our borders and ease travel at ports of entry.

“They contain the new range of security features that will make it much more difficult for people to enter the country illegally. Establishing a more secure Fijian passport, bringing greater integrity to our immigration system.”

Bainimarama has stated that security features of the new passports are similar to New Zealand, Australia, and US

“Fijian e-passport holders will also be protected against forgery, identity theft, and passport tempering and reproduction.”

The Immigration Department has confirmed those who had made applications for the passport till yesterday will receive the new e-passport for $72 and those who will make applications from today onwards will be charged $200.
