December 6, 2019 4:20 pm
The involvement of youth representatives towards the drafting of the National Youth Policy for the benefit of every young Fijian is critical says Minister responsible Parveen Kumar.

The involvement of youth representatives towards the drafting of the National Youth Policy is critical says Minister responsible Parveen Kumar.

Kumar made the statement while officially welcoming 20 newly appointed council members at Suva’s Civic Auditorium today.

The Minister highlighted that 70 percent of Fiji’s population constitutes of Fijians under the age 40 therefore, a huge responsibility lies ahead for these new officer-bearers.

“I am happy to note that it coincides with the Ministry which has engaged in drafting the revised Fiji youth policy to reflect the Ministry’s plan. This is because our Ministry is committed to listening and working with you in identifying youth issues and contributing to national youth solutions”.

Meanwhile, newly appointed Council member Celesiga Drauna says he will propose policies that will also cater for the welfare of youth with special needs

“It was quiet and eye-opening experience reading through the draft policy itself that was non-inclusive it do not cover or cater to the needs of the person with disabilities or gender diverse needs. I’m hoping to highlight these kinds of issues and bring forth the level of awareness needed in the Ministry”.

Viliame Turagavou who is a sports fanatic states the policy which dictates the wider involvement of youth in the sporting arena needs to be reviewed.

“That is something I’ve worked within many years like I said, it’s not only for people who play sports, and it’s for everyone. I will be able to not only implement but also put in place activities that would get everyone involved despite the age and gender”.

The newly appointed Fiji Youth Council members will hold office from Monday next week to assist the Ministry of Youth and Sports over the next two years.
