The Fiji Police Force is working on establishing its first-ever Narcotics Bureau.
Police Commissioner Brigadier Sitiveni Qiliho says the Bureau will need qualified and experienced personnel to execute required duties that will mainly focus on the fight against hard drugs such as methamphetamine.
Qiliho adds that in the past few years the Force has carried out a huge number of raids across Fiji where hard drugs worth millions of dollars have been seized.
He says a stringent selection process will be followed to ensure the Narcotics Bureau achieves its purpose.
“The Bureau is more of a national type set up. But it’s something that we are working hard on, something that needs to happen and we are working on that now, including the identification of people in getting the concept was drawn up and I want to see that information before this end of this year”.
The Police Commissioner says this initiative is a way forward for the Police Force to tackle the importation, selling, and consumption of hard drugs such as methamphetamine.
“It’s something that has to be set up right because it has to be capable of dealing with dirty corps that might be corrupted in terms of the drug issues that go on”.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Inia Seruiratu has assured, that the government will continue to invest and foster national security.
