The new revised marine act has been drafted and vetted and ready to be presented to maritime industry stakeholders before it is endorsed by cabinet next month.

This was revealed by the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama during celebrations today marking World Maritime Day at the Suva foreshore.

While this comes as good news, the Prime Minister believes more needs to be done to ensure safety in the industry.

“Our goals will not be achieved through legislative measures alone. We must generate a new impetus within the shipping industry to go beyond compliance with regulations and explore mechanisms to ensure that a culture of safety is embedded throughout the entire industry.”

The theme for this year’s World Maritime Day is “IMO 100 Years after the Titanic."
