New Housing Policy on the way

Housing Minister Premila Kumar says a holistic approach is needed because of the ever-changing landscape.

A new policy is in the works to synergize all facets of housing from government initiatives to private sales and rental.

” We’ve got a housing act that guides housing authority of Fiji but not the housing sector so there is a need to develop the right policies and to drive the housing sector in the right direction”.

There are talks with the International Finance Corporation for multi-story apartment buildings in densely populated areas – all part of a bigger scheme.

Squatter settlements will also see a new approach with a Housing Advisor from the New Zealand government helping devise solutions.

The Consumer Council this morning held a forum on housing and rental issues in Fiji.

It has recommended stricter laws on property sale and rental advertising, commissions earned by real estate agents and regular inspection of flats under the Real Estate Agents Act.
