One of the pre-requisites of quality and consistent government services in the rural areas is the need for well-maintained infrastructure.

This has been highlighted by Deputy Secretary for the Office of the Prime Minister Sakeasi Waikere while handing over three excavators to the Ministry of Waterways and Environment.

He says these excavators will assist the Ministry of Waterways and Environment in carrying out timely drainage works in flood prone areas.

It will be used for dump site preparation including drainage works and the clearing of irrigation canals.

Waikere says the machines will improve infrastructure in rural areas, including construction of farm roads and preparation of farm lands.

He adds the excavators will be used to benefit Fijians they serve especially those whose livelihoods are dependent on well-maintained drainage and irrigation infrastructure.

The new excavators were donated by the Japanese Government through their Grant Aid programme last year.
