The new Fijian passports with added security features will be available in the next four to six months says Immigration Director, Nemani Vuniwaqa.

Vuniwaqa says the ePassports will strengthen the current passport book and decrease passenger processing at the borders.

Without revealing details on the features of the new book, Vuniwaqa says they are still in the negotiation stage with companies in Europe.

The current passport book suppliers are based in France.

“One main was is a chip. The chip will be embedded into the travel document and the chip will have all the details – so apart from other added security features this will be the main one.”

An ePassport is a biometric passport which includes a chip, which can be used at the automated ePassport gates instead of having your passport checked by a Border Force officer.

The lodging price for the new ePassports will change, but it will be decided once the books are in the country.
