New cable to benefit Northern Division

November 23, 2015 10:52 pm

People living in the Northern Division will soon have greater access to the internet and related services.

The Fijian government has announced it’s in talks with the World Bank to build run fibre optic cables from Suva to Savusavu.

Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says they want to piggyback on the Southern Cross Cable submarine fibre optic cables that run from Suva to Samoa.

“It’s a lot cheaper for us to build a pipe alongside the cable that’s coming from Samoa to Vatuwaqa. It opens up enormous opportunities both in Telecom and internet services so again the whole idea is to build the capacity in the Northern Division too.”

Fibre optic cables to the North will mean better telecommunications and easier connection to the internet.

The government also hopes that this will benefit people on Taveuni as well.
