There’s a great need for more trades people in the country.

Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association Chief Executive, Fantasha Lockington says it’s important that tertiary students get practical experience in the career they choose to pursue.

Lockington says they work closely with some universities including the Fiji Higher Education Commission, to ensure these students know what to expect when they complete their studies.

“We’ve got sufficient people and we’ve got a great education system but perhaps some focus can be provided to ensuring students understand where the needs are in terms of your job. If you’re getting a degree, can you be sure that you’re going to get a job following your attainment of the degree. Making sure that you understand what it is that the country needs of you.”

She adds it’s important that they work with government stakeholders, training and educational institutions to raise awareness on what are some developing trends in an industry and jobs available in the market.
