Acclaimed writer, Professor of Literature at the University of Fiji, Professor Subramani believes there is a need for language activists in the country.
Professor Subramani says there is a serious linguistic crisis resulting in the need to prevent the further deterioration of language, particularly vernacular languages.
During World Hindi Day celebration at the University of the South Pacific today, Professor Subramani highlighted that a very small number of students are pursuing Hindi at the University level.
Professor Subramani says parents need to play an active role.
“Parents got to be told that if they want their children to be good in English, they have to be good in mother tongue. If you don’t have sound grounding in your mother tongue, you are unlikely to be good in English so the languages complement each other.”
Students who scored the highest marks in Hindi during external examination were also recognized during the World Hindi day celebrations.
They were awarded with trophies and certificates.
