NDMO urges public to be prepared

The National Disaster Management Office is urging the public to be prepared.

This as a gale warning remains in force for Eastern Vanua Levu from Labasa to Savusavu, Taveuni, and nearby smaller islands and the Northern Lau Group.

NDMO says it’s important to tie up or nail loose items like iron roof that could blow about and possibly cause injury or damage during strong winds

A heavy rain warning remains in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and nearby smaller islands Lau and Lomaiviti group.

Fijians are also advised to clear tree branches around their homes and parents are to ensure the safety of their children.

Children must not swim in flooded rivers or creeks to avoid drowning incidents.

People are to also clear blocked drainage around their homes to prevent flooding and ensure windows are fitted with shutters.

Those living in low lying areas prone to flooding and storm surges are to know their nearest safe high ground, where evacuation centres are located and the safest access route.

Motorist are not to attempt to drive through flooded areas.

The public is advised to continually monitor weather bulletins and forecasts on the radio/TV or the Fiji Meteorological Services website at www.met.gov.fj.
