In an effort to mitigate flooding and soil erosion along the Navua River banks, the Waterways Ministry has embarked on a major project.
Minister, Dr Mahendra Reddy yesterday commissioned the Navua Riverbank Protection Work near Vunibau Village.
The construction will be carried out by Yadra Viti Investment Limited and Reddy says the project will minimize the impact of flooding around the Navua area.
“Navua town and its surrounding areas are subject to flooding almost every year now. Flooding is also an initiator of soil erosion, especially along the Navua river banks. As a result of this, the riverbanks near Navua River mouth are constantly eroding and if not protected immediately will cause irreversible damages to the chiefly village of Vunibau”
This will cost over five hundred and sixty one thousand dollars.
It will take over four months to complete the work.
