Navua duo escape custodial sentence

Two men who pleaded guilty to stealing bicycles from an apartment in Navua were today handed suspended sentence by the Suva High court.

20-year-old Anare Tomu and 21-year-old Aliki Waliqi were each charged with one count of aggravated burglary and one count of theft.

The court heard that on June 8th the two were drinking beer at a pool side in Pacific Harbour and at mid night they entered an apartment and stole bicycles valued at $750.

The items were recovered later.

The High Court notes that in mitigation the two say that they were remorseful, the stolen items were recovered and that they had cooperated with the police.

The court says it has given the two another chance to mend their ways.

The duo have been sentenced to thirty four and a half months imprisonment, suspended for five years.
