Vanua Levu experiences occasional rain

Rain is being experienced in the whole of Vanua Levu.

In Labasa, it has been drizzling since early morning and there was heavy rainfall for a few hours last night.

There is a lot of debris being brought down by the rain from upstream.

It’s clogging up culverts and could contribute to flooding. Other rivers and creeks in low lying areas of Labasa are also flowing quickly.

The Dreketilailai Crossing is flooded and the current is strong.

It’s now closed to traffic.

Businesses have been advised of the impending weather situation and preparations are at their own discretion.

In Savusavu, there’s occasional rain but businesses are carrying on as normal in town.

A lot of people are doing their back to school shopping and are also buying emergency supplies.

A few sales persons who spoke to FBC News say a lot of people are buying battery operated lights and flashlights.

In supermarkets, cartons of bottled water are running out.

In Taveuni, police say it has been raining.

It’s the same in Bua where there is occasional rain since yesterday.

FBC News understands that authorities are on standby in these areas.

The Northern Emergency Operation Center in Labasa is yet to be activated.

A skeleton staff from the Ministry is monitoring the weather situation.

All HODs have been alerted and are also on standby.
