The National Disaster Management Office has activated the National Emergency Operation Centre.

This is due to the threat associated with Tropical Cyclone Mona looms over the country.

Director, Anare Leweniqila says they have officers on the ground and are working closely with relevant emergency operators for the safety of the public.

Leweniqila says they are also working closely with the Education Ministry on the list of evacuation centres.

So far no evacuation centre has been activated.

Fijians are being warned to take heed of weather bulletins that are being issued by the Fiji Meteorological Services.

He says everyone must take the necessary precautions and secure their homes and livestock as TC Mona is expected to affect the country from later tonight.

Leweniqila says people living in low lying areas prone to flooding and storm surges must know their nearest safe high ground and the safest access route to reach there.

Parents are also warned to ensure the safety of their children.

Motorists are also being reminded to not attempt to drive through flooded areas as this is the cause of most flood-related deaths in Fiji.

For mariners especially small boat owners, Leweniqial says they should not venture in rough seas as this may cause loss of lives as recently experienced.
