Afternoon rain floods parts of Labasa

The Dreketilailai Irish crossing.

Rivers and creeks in the low lying areas of Labasa broke its bank early this afternoon, flooding roads and crossings.

Heavy rain at around mid-day caused the water levels to rise.

At Boubale in Bulileka, the bridge is underwater with a mass amount of debris, mainly tree trunks and plants covering one end of the bridge.

Commuters, which include workers and school children are stranded on both sides of the bridge.

Vehicle owners are being discouraged from driving across the bridge as one end has been washed away.

At Urata, water from the river has overflowed onto nearby farms and plantations.

A lot of debris is being brought down by the rain.

At Dreketilailai, members of the community formed a line across the flooded Irish crossing to allow school children to cross.

One end of the bridge has also been washed away.

Buses have dropped off passengers on one side of the bridge and returned to Labasa Town.
