National Workers Union misleading Fijians: WAF Board Chair

April 30, 2019 1:24 pm

The Water Authority Board Chair has attacked the National Workers Union saying they’re misleading Fijians by giving them incorrect information on the mass staff termination.

Board Chair Bhavesh Kumar says none of their staff are being terminated as claimed by the union.

The National Workers Union is claiming that over two thousand staff were going to lose their jobs.

Kumar says the claims that six hundred WAF workers have been terminated is a lie as most of these staff have successfully passed their performance assessment and their Human Resources team is in the process of renewing their contracts.

He also clarified that WAF hires workers for particular projects and their contracts are coming to an end or has ended depending on the duration of the project.

“What this union is telling the union members, I can’t even begin to imagine what our employees and their families have gone through in the past few days after reading the fake news published about their termination.”

Kumar says they have also advertised for more temporary workers for 2019-2020.

Meanwhile, the National Union of Workers says the comments by Kumar are completely false.

General Secretary, Felix Anthony says they would like Kumar to confirm how many workers are being terminated and the real reasons for the mass terminations.

Anthony says it is baffling that WAF has not given any reasons for the terminations.

He says they’re aware that there are more than 300 projects that are incomplete and left in limbo and contractors have not being paid in a timely manner.

Anthony claims all transport contractors have been withdrawn and workers are made to walk to their workplaces and this includes meter readers.

He adds the Board of WAF and the Government must take full responsibility for this massive termination.
