The National Sports and Wellness Day has enabled Fijians to actively engage themselves in many outdoor physical activities that aims at reducing Non-Communicable Diseases.
This was highlighted by Sports Minister, Laisenia Tuitubou in parliament this morning. He says this allows Fijians to be more aware of their health.
However, Opposition MP Pramod Chand questioned the Minister if this public holiday has been effective over the years.
“How effective has this holiday been nationally in reducing NCDs or amputations caused by NCDs such as diabetes. As we should not just have public holidays that just sound nice and come and go but should impact national productivity and wellness somehow.”
Sports Minister, Tuitubou says health awareness campaigns and initiatives during the day have certainly been effective.
“In 2015 Fiji became one of the NCD countries. We had the meeting in Tonga but now we’ve become the third country so that means awareness and the programmes are going well and it’s getting effective.”
Meanwhile, National Sports and Wellness Day is on the 29th of June.
