National Framework for search and rescue

October 31, 2012 12:04 am

Members of the public can expect a quick response from authorities during disasters and emergencies.

This requirement is part of a national framework for search and rescue work.

Ministry of Defence official, Joji Washington says the national framework will enable response units such as the Navy, Police, DISMAC, Airports Fiji, and the National Fire Authority to coordinate their resources effectively and respond to search and rescue efforts.

“In the proposed structure really we have a defining role for each particular rescue sub centres. We have three sub centres.”

Washington says in the past, authorities have on some occasions taken their time to respond to natural disasters and emergencies.

A two-day workshop to raise awareness about the national framework is underway in Suva.

The framework is expected to be completed by December.
