National Disaster Management act and plan to be reviewed

The National Disaster Management Act 1998 and the National Disaster Management Plan 1995 are both under review so that they are modernized.

Disaster Management Ministry, Deputy Secretary, Loata Vakacegu says the decision to review both the Act and Plan was considered after a number of factors.

Vakacegu says the factors included new emerging issues such as security, gender equality, disability and humanitarian coordination.

She says the plans and act have been vital in knowing and understanding the structure and responsibilities of Government in both periods of peacetime and disasters.

The Ministry is also working in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the Fiji Red Cross Society, and the European Union.

The IFRC has also been commended for their support due to the experience and expertise in international and disaster humanitarian law.
