The National Archives is stepping up efforts to make more people aware of its existence and its role as the country’s keeper of our history.
The Department will be doing just that on a road in the North this week.
Director Archives Opeta Alafaio says, last year alone, six thousand people visited the Department in Suva…it handed out fifty thousand documents and photos during the year.
“There is a level of interest but I think it’s an awareness issue…once people become aware then those numbers will grow.”
The National Archives has in its records the country’s history dating back to 1875.
It has heaps of historical documents and photos of land sales, sceneries, real images of i-taukei tribes, their totems and Girmitya records.
The National Archives has more than one hundred thousand of historical documents and photos and two thousand hours of historical Fiji film.
