National Apprentice scheme review to be completed soon

October 22, 2018 10:01 pm

A taskforce setup to assess the National Apprentice Scheme will complete its review soon.

The scheme was introduced in 1963 under the Labour ministry to provide training through the National Training and Productivity Centers to ensure companies develop the next generation of skilled workers.

Taskforce Chair Peni Taoi says the review is important as it will be able to meet the current and future demands of Fiji’s skilled workforce.

Taoi says it wasn’t an easy review as there were challenges.

Taoi adds four areas that have been reviewed include ownership, funding, delivery and the design of the Apprentice Scheme.

He says this will ensure they look at ways to facilitate and support students through the scheme.

The scheme also allows young people to be paid as employees while they learn on the job, while simultaneously study for academic awards on a part-time basis at a tertiary institute.
