Murder suspect remanded in custody

A 36-year-old man of Naria, Rakiraki, appeared in the Lautoka high court yesterday on a murder charge.

Maloni Moceyawa, was present in court from remand.

He is charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder.

The Defence sought time from the Court for the accused to enter his plea and has also requested the Court to allow the accused to be taken for a psychiatric evaluation.

Moceiyawa allegedly attacked and killed Simran Singh with a cane knife in September this year. She was a Year 10 student of Penang High School, who was on her way home.

He also allegedly attacked and injured Simran’s father, Jainendra Singh, who tried to intervene before fleeing the scene.

Moceiyawa has been further remanded.

The matter has been adjourned to 25 January 2015.
