With many Fijians planning to visit families and friends in the maritime islands and vice versa during the festive season, the Maritime Safety Authority is urging people to adhere to all safety messages and rules in place.
MSAF’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Captain Philip Hill says their priority is the safety of passengers, crew members and protection of the marine environment.
Capt. Hill says it’s only prudent that the public be MSAF’s eyes and ears on the ground when traveling.
He adds that MSAF will ensure that sea worthiness of all vessels are maintained by the ship operators and their officers will carry out a final check prior to departure.
MSAF is urging adults to supervise children at all times on jetties and only take children if they are to travel on board ships.
In addition, passengers on board small boats that are less than 10 meters away from shore, should ensure they have a life jacket readily available for them which must be worn at all times.
Meanwhile, the public are advised to properly dispose their rubbish in bins that have been provided on board all vessels.
