A foreign vessel, now declared a wreck by local authorities is lying partly submerged at the Salia Jetty in Taveuni.

Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji CEO John Tunidau says they’re aware of the capsized vessel at the jetty however they’re trying to identify where it’s from.

“We are trying to ascertain who the owner of the ship is. It is not even registered in Fiji. So, we don’t have jurisdiction of the ship but it becomes a wreck. So, we will have to deal with it. We’ll have to look at how we can dispose of this vessel.”

The capsized vessel was found between Yanuca and the Rabi waters off Taveuni.

It was drifting along the Somosomo Straight.

The vessel was towed to Salia by the Police and MSAF early last month and has been lying there ever since.

Police say looking at the status of the 43 meter long vessel, it’s likely it was burnt and has been drifting for months.
