MSAF Officers to conduct spot checks

October 23, 2018 12:45 am

The Maritime Safety Authority officers will be carrying out spot checks along the Labasa River to ensure the safety of those who use river transport.

Chief Executive, Captain Philip Hill says there have been several accidents along the River in the past few months.

Captain Hill says anyone who operates a boat will have to go through a proper training and their boats must be inspected.

He says this way there shouldn’t really be any accidents.

“Having done the training and getting the boats surveyed we will need to have one enforcement team on the water to try and reduce these accidents because once they leave their point of departure, they tend to forget what they have been trained to do.”

Captain Hill says having a new office in Labasa will mean more manpower and they will be able to send out officers to conduct spot checks.
