A thirty-three-year-old woman convicted of killing her baby in Nasinu two years ago has been sentenced to four years imprisonment by the Suva High court today.
Sangeeta Devi was initially charged with one count of murder but was found guilty of a lesser charge and convicted of manslaughter.
Devi gave birth to a baby boy at her home in Khalsa Road, Nasinu on January 9th, 2016.
The court heard she caused the death of her child by not seeking medical attention after giving birth.
Devi wrapped the baby with a bedsheet and left the newborn in the bathroom where he died of suffocation.
Devi has been sentenced to four years imprisonment with a non-parole period of two years.
However considering the time spent in remand, Devi has to spend three years and ten months behind bars before she’s eligible for parole after serving one year and ten months sentence.
