Most fires that were attended to by the National Fire Authority last year were from informal settlements.

This was highlighted by the NFA Chief Fire Officer, Qionilau Moceitai who says out of the 150 fire cases attended last year, 60 were from the Central/ Eastern Division and 72 from Western Division.

Moceitai says informal settlements do not have proper roads and this causes delays.

“Most fire that happened in these two divisions are from the informal settlements. And the plea to the people who are residing in those areas to be very cautious on the fire, on using fire at their home because one of the biggest concerns for us is trying to reach to that area.”

He also says people in these areas also don’t have fire hydrants near their residence which can be a challenge for them when they run of water.

NFA is urging Fijians living in these settlements to refrain from building their homes too close to one another
