More young people using sites with less writing

Fiji’s digital engagement and mobilization has expanded over the past few years.

During a Media, Democracy and Digital age conference in Suva today – the issue of cyber bullying, revenge porn and fake news flooding social media were discussed with youth groups.

USP researcher, Jope Tarai says Facebook is a popular social site and studies have shown that significant numbers of young people have an online profile and presence.

The much younger audiences are moving to social media sites that have less writing. It’s interesting but certain people in the education sector find this very disturbing. So what does that mean? There’s more affinity for more entertainment influence on social networking sites.

Meanwhile, questions regarding various issues surrounding social media were raised during the conference from participants.

The conference is part of the Valuing Voices programme “Digital Dialogue and Citizens Stories” aimed at advancing rights and freedom.
