More women to be involved in politics – EU

The European Union is urging its member countries to call for more women participants in politics

While speaking during the Women in Politics workshop on Friday, European Union Head of Delegation to the Pacific Sujiro Seam says Women in Parliament worldwide are above average however it is not gender-balanced yet.

Seam says 41 percent of women were elected to be part of the European Parliament during the latest elections last June however more involvement of women is still needed.

“To achieve this result, it takes, of course, nurturing an environment that is conducive to convincing women that they can achieve their goals in fully participating in the political life in the society in which they belong. It takes also the commitment at the highest political level.”

Seam says the incoming European Commission will for the first time have a female President which is a huge step for the commission.

The Commission also for the first time have 13 women and 14 men representative this year.
