More women keen to work in the maritime industry

The Fiji Higher Education Commission is encouraging more women to join the Maritime sector.

The Commission’s Communications Officer Epi Rawalai says there’s a growing demand in the industry that they’re supporting through an array of courses.

Meanwhile, Maritime Safety Authority Acting Chief Executive Captain Phillip Hill has stressed that more women are joining the maritime ranks which are changing the landscape of Fiji’s once male-dominated sector.

“Companies they will have to start adjusting the way that they have facilities available onboard to accommodate females.”

Fiji has 92 qualified female seafarers, of which 27 are with the Fiji Navy.
