First on the list of actions by the government in its National Five and Twenty Year Development Plan is for all Fijians to have access to clean and safe drinking water in adequate quantities by 2031.

Currently, only 78 percent of the population receive clean and safe drinking water and government plans to push accessibility to 92 per cent in the next five years.

Launching the Development Plan at the sidelines of the COP23 meeting, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said climate resilience is now a major component of water and sanitation infrastructure projects and they have scheduled projects to protect our freshwater sources.

These projects will also improve agricultural lands from saltwater intrusion and protect our communities and critical national infrastructure from climatic events.

He adds, this will be complemented by education and awareness programmes to improve water conservation and rural-housing and water-supply programmes that emphasise the harvesting of rainwater.
