Five hundred and forty eight cases of violence against women have been recorded so far this year from January to April.
Fiji Women’s Crisis Center Coordinator, Shamima Ali revealed this during a domestic violence workshop in Sigatoka.
Ali says that with a number of parliamentarians also attending the training it was an opportune time to let them know of the reality that some women and children in Fiji are facing.
“They know there is a high level of violence but they don’t know the dynamics and as legislative it is important for them to know exactly how it happens, what are the causes and so on”
According to the FWCC statistics, more than 6,000 cases of violence against women and children have been recorded over the past 4 years.
Half of these cases were domestic violence.
