More seawalls to be built on Beqa island

Building sea walls in Beqa is government’s key goal for the island after people on the island started experiencing the effects of climate change.

Senior Assistant Roko Tui Rewa Joji Kalounivalu says the project started two years ago but there is more work to be done.

Kalounivalu says that with thel government’s allocation of $100,000 they will continue to build sea walls on Beqa island.

“We have completed about three sea walls in the last two years including the one in Dakuni and also for last year and this year we were able to work on Lalati and Nawaisomo ,at the moment government is working on Naceva’s sea wall.”

Other projects earmarked for the people of Beqa in 2016 is Rural Housing assistance and income generating projects which include tomatoes and Yaqona.
