The Animal Health and Production Unit of the Agriculture Ministry has concentrated on research for the pig breeding programme this year.
Director Animal Health and Production, Tomasi Tunabuna says 80% of the annual budget of $180,000 has been utilised.
‘We’ve also used the funding to build up the programme at the research station where we are getting indigenous breeds and crossing with the improved breeds to try and get resilient breeds and this for the purpose of addressing climate change that we are currently facing’.
Pig breeding is one of the programmes the ministry is trying to develop.
It is also a programme being encouraged especially in the rural areas where residents turn to pig breeding for their livelihood.
