Inmates who have pending cases before the Courts in Lautoka or Nadi will now be kept separately from those that are serving sentences at the Lautoka Corrections Centre.

Fiji Corrections Service Commissioner Francis Kean says this is now possible after the recent $300 000 redevelopment of the Lautoka Corrections Centre.

“one is for the transition of prisoners that come outside of the Western Division that have court cases in Lautoka or Nadi and they will be housed in that particular transition cell which has 12 cells, for the segregation block sometimes we have disciplinary issues and we get to segregate some of these prisoners in this cell and we also have a psychiatric cell.”

Kean says this is also part of the refurbishment plans for other correctional facilities around the country.
