More rain expected in the next few days

More rain is expected for the next couple of days.

Fiji Met Office Director Ravind Kumar says that the associated trough, cloud, heavy rain and strong gusty winds are expected to affect the group tonight and tomorrow.

Kumar says Tropical Depression 08F was located about 19km Northwest of Taveuni or about 67km East-southeast of Labasa at 2pm today.

He says that it is moving North-northeast at about 12km/hr and expected to take an easterly track and move away from the Fiji group.

Kumar adds that in the anticipation of this weather continuing tonight and tomorrow, the following alert remains in force.

“A heavy rain warning remains in force for whole of Fiji, a strong wind warning remains in force for land areas and waters for Fiji and Rotuma. A flood warning is now in force small streams, low lying areas and adjacent to Waimanu and downstream to Rewa river. Flood alert also remains in force for low lying areas and small streams and areas downstream of Nabukelevu and areas adjacent to major rivers of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu and now in force for Emori to downstream of Semo village.”

He adds that people should expect periods of rain tomorrow, heavy at times and squally thunderstorms for most places.

Kumar reiterates that water levels on rivers are rising and the likelihood for flooding is very high in next 12-24 hours around the country.

Members of the public are advised to take necessary precautions.
