More homes to get solar power

3,200 more homes in Vanua Levu will be connected to Solar Home Systems by the end of November.

Director Energy Paula Katirewa says roughly about 7,000 homes – approximately 28,000 – are already connected.

And they will connecting more homes in the next three years.

“We are currently implementing two batches. One is a total of 3,200. We are currently now in Cakaudrove and we will finish that 3,200 in November. There is another batch, about 500 and it also covers Cakaudrove, Bua and Macuata. And as far as our plans are concerned there are still large number of applications to be covered.“

The Department of Energy, through it’s solar project has covered more than 50 per cent of Vanua Levu.

It plans to cover another 20 percent in the next 3 years.

Fiji aims to achieve a 100 percent national electrification coverage by year 2020.
