January 31, 2018 6:56 pm

Many Fijians are now becoming more aware of the recent bans being put in place by the Fisheries Ministry.

The bans include the use of Underwater Breathing Apparatus as well as the harvesting and selling of beach-de-mer and live coral.

Minister responsible, Semi Koroilavesau says they cannot keep an eye out for every illegal activity but are glad to receive reports from the public.

“It is the next door neighbor that reports to us because they understand the importance of sustainability. It is the next village or the next door neighbor that are providing us with information for us to go and make inspections. We are not able to cover every inch of the ground. It is basically the information provided by the public that’s given and we make attempts to do checks.”

Koroilavesau revealed the North western part of Vanua Levu, Macuata and Bua are some areas that have been identified going against the ban.
