Acting Prime Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says there are many companies out there that can be listed on the South Pacific Stock Exchange.

Sayed-Khaiyum says many companies have been through the 3rd or 4th generation phase and when family companies are so large there are a lot of shareholders making decisions.

He says this can lead to lack of professionalism in the manner in which these companies are run and they will have the inability to adapt and adopt to new technology

Sayed-Khaiyum says the government has provided a number of initiatives over the years to encourage companies to list on the Stock Exchange.

He says this will also provide Fijians another source of investing.

“So the opportunity is very ripe, the environment is very ripe. There are a lot of opportunities not just for companies that are listed but also companies that are not listed to be able to participate in this particular space.”

He was speaking at the South Pacific Stock Exchange Awards in Suva last night.
