Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum believes the University of Fiji needs more accountability and better auditing of funds.

Sayed-Khaiyum made these comments following concerns raised by the students of the University’s Lautoka campus.

The students claim certain facilities such as their lecture rooms fail to provide a conducive learning environment and are not of good standards.

The Minister while replying to the students, informed them that the Government in 2018/2019 National Budget allocated $4.2million to the University.

Hence, the allocation was sufficient to address the concerns regarding the learning environment raised by students.

Sayed-Khaiyum adds the responsibility now rest upon the management of the UniFiji to ensure the developments needed are carried out.

However, the students claim management’s response to their concerns were, that the university is yet to receive the funds allocated in the budget.

“They are not telling you the truth, every university gets a grant and all the funds have been disbursed.”

Sayed-Khaiyum urged students to raise any matters concerning regarding the development of their learning facilities with the management.
